Why actors smoke funny

I only found this out the other day and i got a feeling a lot of people know it anyway , but i have never given it much though and for those of you who dont know it;

watch any film where the character is smoking and they are holding there cigarette slightly funny, noticeable especialy on John Travolta and De Niro.

what they do is hold the cigarette always the same distance from the lit end, that way it avoids any continuity problems as they can push it up with there thumb from the butt,

so there you go , anyway back to mopping up after the infamous Flaming Ferraris.
